Most answers to this question are useless, because they give you a number without telling you what the number is attached to. A limo does not have a price the way a hotel room has a price. It has a pricing model, and once you know which one applies to your trip, the number stops being a mystery.
The two ways a limo is priced
Almost every quote you will get is built one of two ways.
Point to point. A set fare for a defined trip — home to O'Hare, hotel to a venue. You are paying for the journey, not the clock. Traffic is our problem, not yours: a fixed fare does not grow because the Kennedy is slow.
By the hour. A flat per-hour rate with a minimum number of hours. You are paying for the vehicle and chauffeur to be yours for the evening, waiting between stops rather than leaving and coming back.
That difference explains most of the confusing price gaps people find online. A sedan airport transfer and a five-hour stretch booking are not the same product quoted differently — they are different products.
What actually moves the number
- Vehicle class. The single biggest factor. A sedan, an SUV, a stretch and a party bus are separated by more than size — they carry different costs to run and insure.
- Hours, on an hourly booking. The second biggest. Going one vehicle size up is usually cheaper than adding two hours.
- Distance and stops, on a point-to-point booking. Each additional stop costs time, and time is what you are buying.
- Your date. Prom season, graduation weekends and December are the busiest windows. If your date is flexible, ask about weekday and off-peak rates.
What does not move it, at least with us: the time of day, the weather, or how busy the city is. There is no surge pricing and no peak-hour multiplier. A snowy 5am airport run on a holiday weekend is quoted at the same rate as a Tuesday afternoon.
By the hour, by the day, or by the trip?
For a single journey, point to point is almost always cheaper. Booking four hours to cover a 40-minute airport run means paying for three hours of parked vehicle.
For an evening with waiting in it — a wedding, a night out, a night with several venues — hourly wins, and it is not close. Point-to-point pricing for five separate legs costs more than five hours of continuous service, and you spend the night waiting for cars instead of having one.
For a full day, hourly still applies, and the per-hour rate is where to negotiate. A full day is a large block of guaranteed time, which is worth more to an operator than five scattered short trips.
The practical test: count the hours you need the vehicle available, not the minutes you will be moving. If those two numbers are close, book point to point. If the first is much larger, book hourly. Our hourly chauffeur service and point-to-point transfers are priced on exactly that split.
What is included, and what is not
Included in the rate: the vehicle, a licensed and insured chauffeur, fuel, and standard tolls and routing. Airport pickups also include flight tracking and a grace period, so a delayed flight does not become a waiting charge.
Not in the "from" rate you see advertised: standard gratuity, and any tolls beyond the standard route. Both are calculated and shown in your quote before you book, not added afterwards. The total you approve is the total you pay.
That is the detail worth checking with any operator. A low advertised rate that becomes a different number at the end of the night is not a low rate.
How much should you tip a limo driver?
The usual advice is 15–20% of the fare, and for most operators that is right, because their advertised price excludes gratuity entirely and leaves it to you.
With us the question mostly goes away: standard gratuity is already calculated into your quote and shown as its own line before you book. You are not expected to work out a percentage at the end of the night, and your chauffeur is not depending on you to guess correctly.
If your chauffeur does something genuinely above the job — an unscheduled stop, help with a difficult load, patience through a delay — an additional tip is welcome and always goes to them. It is a thank-you, not a correction to the price.
What is different about Chicago
Three local realities change the arithmetic here.
Tolls. Most routes to O'Hare or out to the suburbs use the tollway. Standard tolls are in the rate; unusual routing is quoted.
Downtown access. Some Loop and River North addresses have restricted or awkward drop-off points, and a longer vehicle cannot always use them. That affects which vehicle is the right answer more than it affects the price.
Airport timing. O'Hare and Midway both punish tight scheduling. A fixed point-to-point fare with flight tracking removes the risk of paying for someone else's delay — see airport transfers.
For larger groups, the arithmetic changes again: a party bus rental in Chicago splits across enough people that the per-head cost often lands below separate cars.
The short version
There is no single price, but there is a simple rule. Buying a journey? Book point to point and pay a fixed fare. Buying an evening? Book hourly and pay for the time. Check what the quote includes before comparing it with anyone else's, and expect gratuity and tolls to be visible before you book, not after.
